Frequently asked questions about valuation

Q. Please tell us about the lineup of works you handle.

A. We mainly work with contemporary and modern art from the 20th century onward.
In addition to paintings, we also handle photographs, prints, sculptures, ceramics, wine, furniture, etc. Please feel free to inquire.

Q. How is the appraisal process carried out?

A. Based on the information you send us about the work, our professional staff will make a comprehensive judgment according to the latest market prices and the rarity of the work.
We will then present you with a tentative estimate, a reserve price, and a listing fee.
If you accept our offer, we will take custody of the work, inspect the original, and determine the final terms of the sale.
The valuation is not intended to determine the value of the work, and it may not be used or disclosed to the owner or any third party for any purpose other than to consider the work for sale.

Q. What is an estimate?

A. It is the amount of money (upper and lower limits) that We deems appropriate based on the market price of the work, etc., and will be stated in the catalog for the reference to Prospective Buyers, etc.
The auctioneer will determine the first bidding price at his/her own discretion, but it is common to start at a price slightly below the lower limit of the same amount.

Q. What is the Reserve Price?

A. It is an amount of money set as the lower limit of the sales price. When a Reserve Price is set in a sales consignment agreement, unless otherwise agreed upon between SBI Art Auction and the customer, we will not sell the work for less than the Reserve Price.
We do not disclose the Reserve Price.
