In February 1983, Keith Haring held his first solo exhibition in Japan at Galerie Watari (now the Watari-Um Museum).
During his stay at the Hotel Ibis in Roppongi, he created Untitled (Surfboard) that was acquired by the staff ofGalerie Watari, who also attended to his personal needs.
This work was later passed on to the present owner. On his inaugural visit to Japan, Keith Haring not only engaged in mural painting but also experimented with various mediums inspired by Japanese culture, such as fans and hanging scrolls.
He left behind many works in Japan, including just three paintings on surfboards. The rarity of these surfboard paintings makes them exceptionally valuable.
