Jack Pierson, who currently works in New York and California, is an American artist known primarily for his photography and sculpture, which explore a diverse range of everyday emotions, such as love, loneliness, youth, longing, and identity. His ongoing “Word Sculptures” series, initiated in 1991, features letters collected by the artist over the years from closed businesses such as shops, supermarkets, abandoned cinemas, playhouses, and casinos. The words featured in his works are sourced from the contemporary vernacular like overheard in his daily commute, or borrowed from political aphorisms and advertising slogans, and so on. The words and phrases that emerge on the exhibition wall are composed of letters with their own unique materials (such as wood, plastic, neon, metal), colors, textures, shapes, and sizes, which encourage new interpretations and impressions of the language, resonating emotionally with viewers. Hope will be the first opportunity for artwork from the “Word Sculptures” series to be offered at a Japanese auction sale.
His recent solo exhibitions include “Jack Pierson” at Lisson Gallery, London (May 24-August 3, 2024), “Less and more” at Regen Projects, Los Angeles (September 11-October 23, 2021), and “Walking Around” at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris (April 2-May 13, 2017). Pierson’s work is held in the collections of prominent institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, as well as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California.
