SBI Art Auction is pleased to announce the "65th SBI Art Auction | MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART" will be held on Friday, 24th and Saturday, 25th of May 2024, at Daikanyama Hillside Forum.
This sale will be our fourth sales in this year, and we feature a selection of internationally popular artists’ works which will deliver you delightful feeling for early summer. Starting with the work which recorded over 200 million yen at our March sale, KUSAMA Yayoi accelerated her records with our sale. With the latest online streaming sale, her work Pumpkins far surpassed our high estimate. Including her two canvas works, Lemon Squash and Pumpkins, the total of 27 works will be on sale. On the other hand, Andy WARHOL’s large silk screen work, which is painted an iconic Paramount motif, the first ever sale in Japan for Keith HARING’s aluminum work, BANKSY’s renowned work “Girl with Balloon”, and a massive canvas work with a motif of a loved-character Snoopy by KAWS are also listed. Not only paintings, but there is also Cindy SHERMAN’s self-portrait photograph. She became famous for photographing herself with costumes and is also called a socialistic artist.
The auction will be held on 24th (Fri) and 25th (Sat) of May and its preview will be open on 22nd of May (Wed). Some works are available to be seen at the auction venue on the sale dates as well. We are sincerely looking forward to seeing you at the sale.

[Highlight] KOJIMA Nobuaki | Untitled | MARCH 2024 Tokyo Contemporary: Redefined

Highlight from the "63rd SBI Art Auction|Tokyo Contemporary: Redefined" sales on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

Born in Ōno City, Fukui Prefecture, Nobuaki Kojima began exhibiting works that incorporated elements of "Happening" in 1958, predominantly at the Yomiuri Indépendant Exhibition. He engaged with "Anti-art" artists, including Ushio Shinohara. Kojima garnered particular attention for his FRP resin standing sculptures, influenced by "Pop Art." He later moved to the US to advance his artistic career. Having returned to Japan, he continues to be an active figure in the art scene.

This work, Untitled features a standing figure styled as a businessman, shrouded in a red-and-white striped fabric with his face obscured. Crafted from FRP resin, the statue has a rough texture and is coated lacquer. The vivid red, white, and blue hues are striking, yet the concealed face of the man creates a sense of frustration for the observer, as it obscures any insight into his emotions or thoughts. This haunting life-sized sculpture conveys an ineffable sense of loss, serving as a direct commentary on the dehumanization in Japanese society during the Japanese economic miracle. The fabric covering the face bears the Stars and Stripes, symbolizing the States, adding a layer of international political context to the work. Kojima also showcased a red and white curtain at the 14th Yomiuri Indépendant Exhibition in 1962, where he performed a "happening" by standing inside a drum in front of the curtain throughout the day. However, by 1964, the Yomiuri Indépendant, which had been a significant platform for Kojima's work, was discontinued, primarily due to escalating conflicts with the "Anti-art" movement. In the wake of tumultuous artistic upheavals, Kojima's standing sculptures emerge as silent witnesses to the fading echoes of the "Anti-art" era. They are poignant symbols, subtly mirroring Japanese society's stark, unspoken narratives while draping in American pop culture's vibrant yet ironic hues.

[Highlight] Gerhard RICHTER | Strip (3232) (Butin 148) | MARCH 2024 Tokyo Contemporary: Redefined

Highlight from the "63rd SBI Art Auction|Tokyo Contemporary: Redefined" sales on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

Born in 1932 in Germany, Gerhard Richter is a prominent contemporary artist known for his diverse and innovative artworks. Richter has continually pushed the conceptual and visual boundaries of contemporary painting over the course of six decades, encompassing oil painting, photography, glass panel and digital printing. He has challenged artistic conventions, seamlessly moving between abstraction and representation. Richter's iconic photo paintings, expression using of a squeegee technique, and exploration of digital media reflect his profound impact on the art world.
This artwork belongs to Richter's Strip series, initiated in 2011 when Richter was 79. It is a digital inkjet print in 11 colors, derived from a detail of the 1990 hand-painted work Abstraktes Bild [CR: 724-4], which was fragmented and mirrored multiple times. There are 72 different stripe patterns are made in the Stripe series and each of the 72 pieces is a unique piece. The digital prints are laminated onto aluminum behind a thin layer of perspex. Richter employs a method of digitally manipulating and rearranging scanned images, resulting in compositions with vibrant and varied color palettes. By vertically dividing the scanned work, mirroring and copying strips, and then horizontally stretching them, he has created several captivating, colorful striped pieces. In the evolution from manual to digital techniques, Richter has brilliantly fused painting with technology, introducing a captivating alliance.

Richter meticulously documents these patterns in his 2011 publication, "Patterns" The book presents a curated selection from the over 4,000 patterns generated by his software-driven process, with some included in his paintings. This showcases Richter's meticulous focus on detail, color, and print quality.

Richter's work has been exhibited globally, earning recognition for its conceptual depth and technical mastery. Richter's enduring influence has solidified his status as one of the most important contemporary artists.

AUCTION - 2023.12.27

[Highlight] Pierre-Auguste RENOIR | Tête de jeune fille épluchant un fruit | JANUARY 2024 Modern and Contemporary Art

Highlight from the "62nd SBI Art Auction|Modern and Contemporary Art" sales on Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Renowned as a leading figure in the Impressionism, Pierre-Auguste Renoir left an indelible mark on the art world, producing nearly 3,800 oil paintings throughout his prolific career - a staggering volume that outshines contemporaries like Oscar-Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne. Renoir's artistic journey grasps changes over time. Many of his early works were initially inspired by Impressionism's vibrant palette.

“About 1883 something like a break occurred in my work. I had reached the end of ‘impressionism,’ and I had come to realize that I did not know how to paint or draw. Simply put, I was in a deadlock.” As he says, Renoir felt the limitations of the Impressionist style, especially the method of dividing brush strokes, and thereafter moved on to explore his own unique expressions.

Bathed in his characteristic bright colors and gentle brushstrokes, this particular masterpiece of a girl portrait was created in 1895 after a decade of artistic exploration. With the splendid fusion of the sense of form acquired by pursuing the classical drawing method of drawing objects with clear lines and the color expression influenced by impressionism, the body remains standing out from the background and maintains shaped. The leisurely motion of the hand peeling fruit and the radiant, smooth skin of the young girl convey a profound sense of her warmth and innocence.

Best known for his depictions of joyous scenes, female sensuality, and landscapes, Renoir became synonymous with vibrant colors, fluid brushwork, and an unwavering focus on capturing the play of light. Today, his works are displayed in major museums and collections around the world, and he remains an important figure in the history of art. This year marks 150 years since the first Impressionist exhibition which Renoir, Monet and others participated in 1874. The magnitude of the influence that the Impressionist painters have had on the future of art history is immeasurable.

AUCTION - 2023.12.27

[Highlight] Marc CHAGALL | Le Cirque (Mourlot 490-527) | JANUARY 2024 Modern and Contemporary Art

Highlight from the "62nd SBI Art Auction|Modern and Contemporary Art" sales on Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Marc Chagall, a Belorussian-born French artist, is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. As a trailblazer of the Modern art movement, he left behind extensive paintings, ceramics, print works, that are dreamlike masterpieces. His extensive works undoubtedly had a profound impact on the art world. This captivating lithograph set "Le Cirque" beautifully expresses his lifelong fascination with the circus.

Chagall's fascination with the circus dates back to his childhood. As a child in pre-revolutionary Vitebsk in modern-day Belarus, the spectacle of traveling acrobats, clowns, and equestrians trying to entertain the local villagers made a deep impression on him. The scene of a father and son attempting a clumsy yet intense juggling act on the street, only to be overlooked by the indifference of the villagers, was etched in his mind. This representative set of lithographs from 1967 artistically captures Chagall's childhood impressions of the circus as a vivid and dynamic spectacle.

This complete set consists of 23 color and 15 black-and-white lithographs, capturing a dream-like tableau depicting animals, acrobats, and clowns. Chagall skillfully brings to life his childhood fascination with the circus and vividly portraying memories of his vibrant youth. Within this set, his iconic motifs-- goats, hens, horses adorned with irregular colors, energetically animated circus organizers, lovers floating through the air, and jugglers leaping in the distant background—are seamlessly blended. Through these masterful compositions and colors, Chagall established his distinctive artistic style and earned an unshakeable reputation as one of the leaders of modern art.
