Modern and Contemporary Art
SBI Art Auction will hold “The 69th SBI Art Auction | MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART” on Saturday, January 25th and Sunday, January 26th, 2025, at Daikanyama Hillside Forum. This sale will feature a remarkable selection of works by internationally acclaimed masters to emerging artists, offering a fitting start to the new year, 2025.
One of the sale highlights is Small Window by YAMAGUCHI Takeo. This work reflects his pioneering abstract expression and embodies his powerful brushwork and distinctive color sense. KUSAMA Yayoi’s works include an acrylic painting of her iconic pumpkin motif as well as bronzes and glitter silkscreens, will be featured. Meanwhile, another Japanese renowned artist, NARA Yoshimoto’s unique works will be up for the auction. They include a ceramic sculpture, Fire Mountain (No. YNF5387), and a massive set of sixteen prints.
With a focus on international artists, we will feature a print work, Haggadah (P2), by Gerhard RICHTER. This piece represents his distinctive style which blends figuration and abstraction with a deep exploration of light and color and creates beauty within abstract art. Apart from him, there is Red Coat (Cantz 164) by Alex KATZ, whose figurative expression and striking color selection were revolutionary in the 1950s in the United States, where abstract expression was becoming an art trend. This painting’s vivid red color and its dynamic structure bring vibrant energy to the start of the new year. On the other hand, Andy WARHOL’s silkscreen of Franz KAFKA’s portrait will offer refreshing tones of blue with a distinct modern touch. From Asia, artworks by LEE U-fan, particularly his painting of “Dialogue series,” will evoke a strong awareness of blank space and offer a profound three-dimensional presence, embodying a simplicity that is both striking and thought-provoking.
In addition to these iconic figures, this auction will feature works by emerging talents. ROKKAKU Ayako’s Untitled presents a delicate interplay between a girl and flowers against a white background. It offers a refreshing and unique style compared to her vibrant style which fulfills surfaces with multiple colors vividly. The work of TOMOZAWA Kotao, an up-and-coming artist who has garnered attention since her student days, will be presented with her striking piece. The painting depicts red slime covering a face, which could be interpreted as that of a toddler, and creates a contrasting impression.
As the beginning of a new year, we invite you to experience the power of art through these exceptional pieces. The auction will be held over the weekend, and the viewing period will be extended, providing an excellent opportunity for those who may not usually attend to visit. We are committed to providing a platform for art lovers to discover works that resonate with them, and we look forward to welcoming you at the auction and its preview.
